ICD 9 CM, the US icd 9 code system

The US ICD 9 Code system is ICD-9-CM, the International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision, Clinical Modification.

The icd 9 code system is hierarchical.  You cannot report an icd 9 code above another icd 9 code in the hierarchy when the icd 9 code below has the same first digits.  So, you cannot report icd9 code 010 or icd9 code 010.1 since icd9 code 010.10 exists.  This specificity rule holds for an ICD9 procedure or diagnosis code.

The Health Care Portability and Accountability Act ( HIPAA ), now requires that all US healthcare providers and payers use the ICD-9 coding system for reporting diagnosis codes as of October 16, 2003.

ICD9 Code Maintenance

The US adopted the WHO icd 9 code system in 1979.  The US added the ICD9 V diagnosis code for health maintenance and ICD9 E diagnosis code for trauma.  ICD-9-CM uses icd9 code procedures for inpatient billing and ICD9 medical diagnosis codes.  ICD-9-CM has been used since 1986.

The National Center for Health Statistics maintains the icd 9 code system along with coordination from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  Updates are effective October 1.

ICD 10

HIPAA mandates use of the icd9 codes system. The icd 10 code system, ICD-10-CM, is considerably different from the icd9 code system.

ICD-10-CM for diagnosis codes and ICD-10-PCS for procedures will go into effect in 2007. ICD-10 code procedure codes are seven alphanumeric characters.
